Folarin Falana aka Falz just released a new track that is our mood for Detty December. Falz features Niniola in Squander, his groovy Afro-house song about how much money they have and how willing they are to squander it on the people they love.
The last song Falz released was Johnny, a hard-hitting hip-hop track about police brutality. This is a conversation heavy on the lips on many Nigerians since the End SARS protests and the succeeding violent military crackdown in October 2020.
Falz has a reputation for speaking on social issues through his music. He has been very clear about where he stands. As such, the subjects of his songs are often a reflection of what is going on in the country.
Different parts of Nigeria take shifts (some longer than others) in experiencing hardship and different forms of violence. But the start of the holiday season has put many in a mood where they can briefly escape from Nigerianness and focus on their families and their happiness.
As such, a theme song for Detty December is quite timely. While many may not understand the language in the song, the message and the vibe are universal. Squander says it’s time to take a break and enjoy yourself. Or to quote directly, “I’m sorry, should l turn around / nobody told me that flexing is not allowed / Call my aboki bring out the cash.”
