Popular singer, Davido has reflected on #EndSARS, the nationwide protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

In an interview with British daily newspaper, The Guardian, Davido said he was crying at home while he watched the footage of the Tuesday, October 20, 2020 onslaught of peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Tollgate area of Lagos.

“For any artiste, as you grow, you find your voice,” he said. “People know me for being that guy – the life of the scene – but we’re in mad times. You can’t be happy with how things are going. I was just at home crying while watching the Lekki incident footage.”

Acknowledging his priviledge of travelling and commuting with his own security detail, Davido explained that it’s not people like him that experience police brutality but the masses.

“It’s not something we experience – it’s not the rich they’re doing this to. The masses, they’re the ones bearing it. It has to stop. Why should police be abusing people when they should be protecting them? It doesn’t make sense. You hear the atrocities these guys commit, it’s crazy. They should get justice, but look at what is happening,” lamented.

The music star further reflected on #BlackLivesMatter, the movement against police brutality in the United States (US) where he was born, as he opened up on what drives him.

Davido stressed: “It’s a global thing … I’m just tired. What really drives me now is leaving a legacy. You see artistes like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti who challenged the system, his sons are still making music, his album covers sell for thousands of dollars. People still look to him now.”
