Davido becomes first African artiste to hit the Atlanta golden spike

Nigerian pop musician, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has set a new record as the first African artiste to hit the Atlanta golden spike.

The Atlanta golden spike is the ceremonial last spike on a railroad track. It is fixed into a railroad track after the track is laid. 

Atlanta is one of the United States’ railroad cities. In the city, the hitting of the golden spike is a tradition and it occurs before the start of matches played by the Atlanta United FC, Atlanta’s Football team. 

Born in Atlanta to Nigerian parents, Davido, hit the golden spike on Saturday night. The popular artiste is the first African artiste to perform the tradition. This was after the Major League Soccer match between Atlanta United FC and Columbus Crew that day.

The multiple-award winning musician shared a video of himself hitting the spike with fans cheering on his Instagram stories. He was wearing the team’s jersey. The jersey had on it the letter 7 with his name also written in gold. 

Using their verified Twitter account, The Atlanta United FC also shared the moment in a video with the caption: “Atlanta born. Nigeria made Afrobeats artist @Davido is your Golden Spike Hitter. 

The game took place at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It was fully packed to its 70 thousand capacity. 

Atlanta native, Kanye West, also graced the occasion. This was after his ‘Donda‘ album listening event at the same stadium. The American rapper also shared clips of himself in the stands with supporters on his verified social media pages.

In the past, other artistes like American rappers Yung Joc, 2 Chainz, Waka Flocka, country musician Zac Brown, others have hit the golden spike.
