Nigerian rapper, Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, popularly known as Vector, has joined other Nigerians, who paid tribute to late rapper Dagrin.
Today, Wednesday, April 22, 2020, marks 10 years since the indigenous rapper passed away after a horrific auto-crash. Throngs of people, including Vector remembered him on his death anniversary.
Paying tribute to the late rapper, Vector took to saying he and Dagrin never had a close relationship other than that of respect.
He wrote, “We celebrate Dagrin today. We never really had a close relationship other than that of respect. We met a lot around storm records events as young rappers seeking better opportunities. His album CEO just sprung up out of nowhere and boom! “Mummy mi o si ni ile” all beach fronts.”
The short-lived rap star
Dagrin may not have lived long enough, but one thing is certain. His impact on the music landscape in Nigeria, particularly rap, will linger for long in the memory of music enthusiasts.
The rapper, who is unarguably considered as one of the pioneers of modern rap and street anthems in the country, had two albums to his credit.
Dagrin became famous for highlighting the struggle and survival of average Nigerians in his songs. He was also famous for promoting culture through his songs. He had a unique style of rapping indigenously, with a blend of pidgin and English; which inspired the growth of indigenous rap music in the country.
May his soul continue to rest in peace.
