Following the latest reported cases of coronavirus in Nigeria, Yemi Alade has sought the accountability of the relief funds that have so far been donated to Lagos and Federal Governments.

The music star in a series of tweets on Monday, April 20, 2020, expressed her curiosity regarding the management of the donated funds, thereby asking the Babajide Sanwo-Olu and President Muhammadu Buhari-led administrations to give accounts of how they have been utilising the funds they have received from well-meaning Nigerians and organisations.

Alade’s tweets read partly; “His Excellency @MBuhari, there are questions surrounding the allocation of the over 25billion naira COVID 19 relief funds that has been generated so far. Transparency was promised and the 7days of grace has been exceeded. Are the NGOs in charge “government-owned” or private?

“His Excellency @MBuhari @NGRPresident thank you for service at this time. With the 50million Euros donated by EU(21 billionNaira), Cash transfers to mitigate the impact of social distancing measures were stated as PRIORITY. What agencies/NGO s are in charge of the weekly distribution?”

Alade further expressed her concern over the daily feeding of residents in Lagos, saying it needs to be looked into.

According to her, many Lagosians have refused to stay at home despite the risk of going out because of the need to feed their families.

Since the coronavirus lockdown began in some parts of the country, the spate of robberies has been on the rise. Some members of the public attributed this to hunger, which they said will kill more people than the virus.

Has Alade successfully highlighted the challenges faced by an average Nigerian as the lockdown continues?
