Afropop singer Teniola Apata, known mononymously as Teni, said in an interview that she does not believe in controversy. Speaking with Ebuka on Rubbin Minds, that she does not care for controversy because the talent and the music outlive it.
When Ebuka asks her if controversy was an essential part of being a celebrity, she said it was not. She said she cared, rather, for the music; because the music would last longer than the controversy.
The Billionaire singer continued on to say, “People forget what you said or did on so and so day. But the music or the talent would be your legacy long when you die”. Then, she talked about reggae legend Bob Marley; about how no one cares about whatever he did or did not do when he was alive.
In an era where many Nigerian celebrities thrive on gossip, controversy, and drama on social media; it would be nice to return to a time where entertainment was about the art, not the insults, beefs, or drama.
Ebuka then asked her about her social media fail about a month ago; when she got into an ill-conceived argument with feminists over what she considered “equality”.
She maintained her stance on “choice feminism”, dismissing the nuances in the arguments brought up on Twitter that day. She claimed that some people don’t read to understand. Rather, they just react to be a part of things.
Among other things, the Case crooner also talked about not feeling pressure to be sexy. But she says she encourages women to be sexy as long as they are doing it for themselves.
Teni herself, however, is not about controversy or sexiness, she says. She is all and only about the music and she should keep it that way.
