An Eastern Tribute: Burna Boy Premieres Visuals for “Odogwu”

Burna Odogwu visuals

African Giant Burna Boy gave his Eastern fans a treat with his just-premiered visuals for Odogwu. The video premiered at 3PM with thousands of fans all over Africa watching and commenting in real-time.

In the video for Odogwu, Burna Boy pays tribute to Igbo culture, donning their traditional attire; as well as infusing flutes and traditional dances in his music video.

The video also features a peculiar set, with kerosene lamps hanging from the ceiling and speedboating skidding across a river. The scene with older Igbo men in a shopping mall is a juxtaposition of the traditional and modern, presumably in Nigerian music.

Burna Boy’s Odogwu is reminiscent of D’Banj‘s 2008 hit song Igwe; which boasted of the popularity of a non-indigenous artiste in Igbo land, something which does not happen so often.

However, a good listen to D’Banj’s Igwe would prove that it is still relevant today and actually more authentic than Burna’s Eastern tribute.

Burna Boy dropped the song Odogwu across all platforms on the 28th of February, 2020. This was his first official release of the year. With the positive reception of Odogwu, it is clear that this will be another Burna year.
