Burna Boy and Sowore’s Clash Triggers Fela Debate

Burna Boy and Sowore's Clash Triggers Fela Debate

Since yesterday (Wednesday, 29, 2020), singer Burna Boy and activist Omoyele Sowore have been a trending topic on social media.

Sowore had invited Burna Boy to join him for his Revolution Now protest scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2020, which is Nigeria’s 60th Independence Day anniversary.

Extending his invite to the music star on Twitter, Sowore noted that Burna Boy is often compared to the late legendary afro-beat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

According to him, the self-styled African Giant is celebrated by foreign media as a revolutionary musician but has not done any revolutionary act like the legendary whom he is compared to.

Sowore wondered why Burna Boy has never led a protest in Nigeria and seized the opportunity to invite the Wonderful singer to join him in his protest.

In his reaction to the invite, Burna Boy said Sowore is one of the many politicians in Nigeria that can’t be trusted. Thus, he won’t honour his invite.

“Everybody is a Fela fan and supporter now that he is dead. Humans are so Funny, You politicians are ALL the same (especially in Nigeria) and Frankly, I don’t trust none of you.@YeleSowore,” he retweeted.

“Hello @burnaboy, everywhere I turn people describe you as a revolutionary musician, the foreign media even celebrate you, compare you to Fela Kuti, but I am yet to see you lead anyone to a police station carrying a coffin for head of state! Join #Oct1stProtest #RevolutionNow,” he tweeted.

Replying Burna Boy, Sowore explained that he had been a member of the Fela family, enthusing that “I am a member of Fela’s household, ask Seun Kuti.”

The former presidential candidate added: “I am not just one of the persons who you could describe as Fela’s fan after he died. I am a member of Fela’s household, ask @RealSeunKuti , as a student’s leader in the 90s I met and hung out with Abami Eda at home and the African shrine! If you want to be Fela be Fela.”

This exchange however led to a debate on social media as users began a debate on Fela.
