Brooklyn Nine-Nine gets eight and final season

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The eight and final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is finally coming to our screens.

NBC say the final season will begin airing after the Tokyo’s Summer Olympics with a premiere set for August 12. The new season will have only 10 episodes, making it the shortest in the show’s history.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the activities of Detective Jake Peralta, Captain Raymond Holt and officers of the NYPD’s 99th Precinct.

Following protests against police brutality in America, the show had to be delayed last year. The last episode aired in April 2020 as the show missed the 2020-2021 television season.

From the synopsis, it sounds like this final season will involve issues around police brutality. The synopsis read,

“Jake and the squad must try to balance their personal lives and their professional lives over the course of a very difficult year.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine executive producer, Dan Goor stated that Season 8 would address issues of police brutality and systemic inequality.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was famously canceled by Fox in 2018 after five seasons to the dismay of fans worldwide. However, the show got revived in the same year by NBC for a sixth season. The seventh season reached 24 million viewers worldwide.

The returning cast

Melissa Fumero will return in her role as Sgt. Amy Santiago, an expert at organizing and dork dancing. Terry Crews will continue as the gentle giant, Lt. Terry Jeffords. Joe Lo Truglio plays the hopelessly hardworking Det. Charles Boyle. Stephanie Beatriz is the tough and secretive Rosa Diaz, with Joel McKinnon Miller and Dirk Blocker as veteran officers Det. Scully and Det. Hitchcock.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine executive producer, Dan Goor in a statement said,

“I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve. Ending the show was a difficult decision, but ultimately, we felt it was the best way to honor the characters, the story and our viewers. I know some people will feel disappointed it’s ending so soon, but honestly, I’m grateful it lasted this long. Title of my sex tape.”
