Britney Spears’ father petitions to end Conservatorship

Britney Spears’ father suspended as conservator

American singer, Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears has petitioned to end his daughter’s conservatorship 13 years after it began.

The 69 year old stated in his filing on Tuesday that Britney may no longer need a conservatorship. Britney’s legal team has branded this move a “massive legal victory” for the former Disney star.

Although he stepped down as the conservatorship of her person in late 2019, Jamie remained in charge of his daughter’s finances, as a conservator of her estate.

The filing states that Britney “is entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required.”

It continues,

“She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy. And wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.”

The petition is following accusations of conservatorship abuse by the 39 year old star. This resulted in months of scrutiny for Jamie, who has controlled the conservatorship conversation, at least in part, for years.

A month ago, the singer’s father had told the court that he’d step away only “when the time is right.”

Britney Spears has attempted to remove her father as the overseer of her $60 million estate twice in the last two years. She has also refused to perform while he retains control.
