Global superstar Beyoncé is celebrating the 5th anniversary of her genre-bending culture-resetting era-defining album Lemonade.
In Lemonade, Beyonce explored the African-American roots of the various genres while confirming her husband Jay-Z’s infidelity and her process of working through it. Lemonade also explored the beauty of Black history, womanhood and motherhood.
Lemonade was accompanied by a 65-minute film that premiered on HBO and transformed the way music is distributed. This was not her first visual album though; her 2013 self-titled surprise drop forever changed the music industry. However, this was grand, even for someone as iconic as Beyoncé.
Beyoncé shared a post on Instagram to celebrate the fifth anniversary of her iconic visual release, calling it “one of my favourite pieces of art” alongside a gallery of photo stills from the project.
“I’m grateful that this body of work has resonated so deeply with so many people,” the mother of three captioned the post. “I’m so thankful for all the beautiful souls involved in making one of my favourite pieces of art. As I celebrate five years of LEMONADE, I encourage everyone to continue healing, loving, forgiving and uplifting.”
She concluded, “I hope you find joy today.”

Queen Bey dropped Lemonade on April 23, 2016, through its same-titled film, which was soundtracked by the album’s songs, and premiered on HBO. The 12-song visual album was released by Parkwood/Columbia Records following the film’s debut, initially as an exclusive through Tidal.
With standouts like Hold Up, Formation, All Night, and Sorry, Lemonade debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, earning Beyoncé her sixth-chart topper. The set includes guest appearances by Jack White, James Blake, The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar.
Following its release, all 12 of the album’s songs debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Lemonade was also 2016’s third-biggest-selling album and one of only two albums released that year to sell at least 1 million copies.
