Canadian alternative rock singer Avril Lavigne yesterday released her latest single Dumb Blonde which featured rap star Nicki Minaj. Prior to the release, she wrote a heartfelt message extolling Minaj for her talent and driving force in the industry as a black female emcee.
Taking to her twitter handle she wrote:
“It’s out!!!! #DumbBlonde with the legendary Nicki Minaj!! Nicki is such a talented, strong woman and driving force. I listen to Fly, Starships and Bed all the time. Having her on the song is so special to me.”
She further elaborated the essence of the song.
“We wrote Dumb Blonde as an anthem for anyone who has been stereotyped or talked down to. Keep your confidence up and don’t let anyone tell you how to be.”
The idea behind the track seems to be timely considering the backlash Minaj faced following newcomer Cardi B’s Grammy win. Both Minaj and Lavigne are yet to secure a win at the Grammy in spite of the multiple nominations they have accrued over the relatively long span of their careers.
Lavigne’s latest unnamed effort is set to drop on Friday, February 15.
