Nigerian photographer and filmmaker, Andrew Dosunmu’s film “Mother of George” has been named the 93rd best movie of the decade by notable film review site, IndieWire.

The movie which was released back in 2013, a sophomore feature effort by the highly acclaimed filmmaker is a breathtaking drama, described as “devastating and dazzling in equal measure” by Indiewire.

The movie is in relatively good company, as it makes the list alongside Oscar winners and critics’ favourites like “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Moonlight”, “Black Panther”, “Lady Bird”, “The Wolf Of Wall Street” and more.

The movie tells the intriguing story of Ayodele (Casino Royale’s Issach de Bankolé) and Adenike Balogun (Black Panther’s Danai Gurira), a newly married Nigerian couple in Brooklyn, who own and manage a small restaurant while struggling with fertility issues. In Nigerian culture, having a baby is pretty much expected of every married couple soon after marriage, so the difficulty that Adenike and Ayodele face leaves them terribly vulnerable, which ultimately leads Adenike to a drastic solution that could tear her and her husband apart.

Commenting on the nomination of the film for IndieWire’s top 100 films of the decade, Tambay Obenson said; “Made for the big screen but still waiting for a big audience – Mother of George – is not only one of the best films of this decade, it will also be one of the best discoveries of the next.”
