The 2019 edition of Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) holds today, 27th October and will air live on satellite TV stations.
Currently in its 15th edition, AMMA has been pushing the African cinema to the world stage, awarding some of the best movies ever produced across Afirca. Awards are presented annually to recognize excellence among professionals working in, or non-African professionals who have contributed to, the African film industry. The AMA Awards are widely considered to be Africa’s most important film event and the most prestigious film award in Africa.
Founded by Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, it is run through the Africa Film Academy. The awards are aimed at honouring and promoting excellence in the African movie industry as well as uniting the African continent through arts and culture. The award presentation is attended by numerous media representatives, celebrities, politicians, journalists, actresses and actors from all across the world.
This years edition recieved over 700 film entries. The nominations for the 2019 AMA Awards was announced via a live broadcast by the president of the AMAA 2019 Jury, Asantewa Adetunji in September. There are 27 categories spanning from best short film to best animation to best documentary and best film.
Kemi Adetiba’s sophomore film, “King Of Boys” was one of the 2018’s most successful Nollywood films, smashing records and earning critical acclaim. The film has been recognised by the Africa Movie Academy Awards, nabbing eight nominations, including “Best Film”. Adekunle “Nodash” Adejuyigbe’s Movie, “The Delivery Boy” also featured in 12 categories including Best Director first feature movie.
The founder, Anyiam-Osigwe disclosed that Funnybone, Kemi Lala Akindoju, and Lorenzo Menakaya will be co-hosting the show, which is scheduled to hold at the Landmark Events Centre, Lagos, Nigeria today at 4pm.
