Afropop singer Adekunle Gold just dropped the visuals for his new single Something Different. The video comes days after the singer and his wife, Simi, welcomed their first child, a baby girl — Adejare (Deja).
In the less than three-minute (2:58) colourful video, the latest father could be seen at the start of the video reflecting on his love for a woman, who is only interested in his money.
And although the dreamy and nocturnal video and steady beat of the song are easy to vibe to, Something Different is a complete departure from the Adekunle Gold we used to know.
In fact, this song is closer to StarBoy and Wizkid’s Blow than it is to Adekunle Gold’s Jore. One cannot help but wonder if Gold is on a new journey, with Afrobeats as a pitstop; or if he is now focused on delivering a more generally palatable sound for Nigerians.
The subject matter of the song itself is the banal echoing of a singer who currently has nothing to say.
If you scroll through the Afrobeats catalogue, every year, there are at least 10 songs going back and forth; either offering a woman money or lamenting about said woman only wanting money.
Adekunle Gold singing about this despite being in a loving marriage just blessed with a child shows that his songwriting is just for songwriting’s sake. This is indeed something different. This is disappointing.
