“A Star” EP: Why Okiemute Might Have A Fight On Her Hands

MTN Project Fame West Africa season 9 winner, Okiemute Ighorodje is back with a new EP titled “A Star”.

The Afro-pop performer seems determined to give long-suffering fans a packed taste of her amazing vocals coupled with excellently produced beats, something GospelOnTheBeatz is largely responsible for.

In the four-track EP, she gives a mash of rhythms and melody almost reminiscent of a marriage between Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay. There is also a heavy sampling of a modern groove in the body of work quite noticeable in tracks like number 2, “Trouble”.

“Trouble” is one of the more daring tracks on the EP as it goes further to sound masculine – if music had a gender, that is. “Lau Lau” starts with a Wizkid-Esque vibe laid thickly by some pipes before swelling to feature Okiemute sing about her wealth unabashedly (a Wizkid thing too).

“Omo Kalakuta” might turn out to be the crowd-pleaser on the “A Star” EP. Asides paying homage to the late Fela Kuti, it features Okiemute singing about her relationship with a drama king. Definitely, a refreshing topic if you want to be less critical.

You can listen to her EP below:

Okiemute strikes several chords on her EP; all of them ranging from our faves to legends. She delivers her music with crisp vocals and ‘meh’ lyrics laid over solid beats.

It would have been nice to listen to something different from the stereotype-hating songster. This EP puts her in the same category as a lot of artists already on the block, however, she might be on a rung lower than her skill deserves.

Okiemute is recently signed to Flux Factory record label owned by ace music producer, GospelOnTheBeatz.
