Toxic relationships are damaging in real life but can be so much fun to watch in movies. The drama, the heightened emotions, the sexiness — we love to see it. If you’re looking for movies that portray toxic relationships, here are 5 good ones you can check out…
1. Gone Girl
Gone Girl is a female rage movie adapted from the Gillian Flynn book of the same name. It follows the story of Nick Dunn, a man whose wife Amy is missing and presumably dead, as the evidence points to him as her murderer. As more of the story is revealed, we come to realize that Amy is not exactly the perfect victim she appears to be.
2. Ruby Sparks
Ruby Sparks is a movie about an author who writes himself the perfect girlfriend and she comes to life. But when she does things that displease him, he rewrites and changes things about her, thereby making his ideal woman a prisoner to his will.
3. The Notebook
This classic movie follows two lovers that have to overcome their class differences to be together. Before the die-hard rom-com fanatics come at me about how a Nicholas Sparks adaptattion could never be toxic, Noah’s behaviour was very manipulative at several turns and raised many red flags.
4. Waves
While Waves tells a compelling story about familial relationships, the relationships in this movie between the main character Tyler and his family; as well as his relationship with his girlfriend are riddled with miscommunication and anger.
6. Malcolm and Marie
This movie follows a couple of the same time on the night of Malcolm’s movie premiere when Marie talks about how unappreciated he makes her feel. He proceeds to jump the gun and verbally abuse her for almost 2 hours while she has brief stints of calling him unoriginal, mediocre, and narcissistic.
