An anthology series is a TV series that doesn’t follow the rules of continuity. It is not like a normal series that follow characters and plotlines for multiple seasons.

The entire series may have a theme, but each episode or season typically has an independent storyline. Check out this list of captivating anthology series you need to watch.

1. High Maintenance

We’re kicking this list of on a high note with High Maintenance. High Maintenance is an anthological comedy/drama web series that is shot in Brooklyn and, sometimes, Manhattan.

Each episode follows the various customers of an unnamed marijuana dealer, each with their own stories and struggles in life. It is a very raw, humorous and visual form of storytelling, free from the inane structure of traditional TV series.

2. American Horror Story

If you’re a fan of freaky and twisted things, this might just be the show for you. As the name implies, AHS is a horror TV series set in different places and times in America.

Each season dives into a different story in a fictional city in America. This anthology series has been running for nine seasons and has been greenlit for a tenth season. Also, the show has featured celebrity acts like Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson.

3. Fargo

Fargo is an anthological crime drama series based on true events. It explores how quickly one small act of deceit can spiral into a series of crimes that are hard to get a handle of. Each season is based in Minnesota but in different time periods.

Although each is a contained story, they all crossover with each other and the series itself. There was an original Fargo that aired in 1996, but it was a flop. But we have now is a well-thought-out intricate crime series that is intriguing to watch.

4. LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS

This collection of animated short stories spans several genres, including science-fiction, fantasy, horror, and comedy. World-class animation creators bring captivating stories to life in the form of a unique and visceral viewing experience.

The animated anthology series includes tales that explore alternate histories, life for robots in a post-apocalyptic city and a plot for world domination by super-intelligent yoghurt.

5. Black Mirror

Finally, we have Black Mirror. This anthology series examines modern society through the lens of misanthropy. The show takes a look at the unanticipated consequences of new technologies and how they affect human behaviours and interactions.

Episodes are usually set in an alternative present or the near future, often with a dark and satirical tone, though some are more experimental and lighter. Despite it being anthological, there is a string of cultures and ideas that connect some of the episodes.
